It is Krolewskie Jadlo at the heart of little Poland in Greenpoint. It translates to the Kings Feast and the decor fits well. They even have knights flanked at the doorway. The menu also fits because those portions were big.
Upon sitting down they gave us soft bread with pickled cucumbers (crunchy goodness) and a spread. I later found out the spread is smalec, or pig fat/lard. Wow it sounds like some heavy stuff but was quite good and fresh. I started with a borscht soup with dumplings and it was delish. Similar to Asian soups, I like that it's light and I'm sure good for health. The dumplings were similar to the fried perogies which followed up:
There were onions/mushrooms, meat, potatoes (my favorite). Also a parallel to Asian dumplings.
My favorite main was stuffed cabbage, drizzled with tomato sauce which was sweet and tangy.
Also had stuffed pheasant. Quite different from the stuffing of a Thanksgiving turkey, had a nutty taste.
This was another fried dumpling plate with berries. It didn't leave an impression; I even forgot what was in it...
Otherwise, the whole meal really filled us (2 people) up and leftovers to bring home.
Polish food is a risky take if you aren't fond of blood sausages and vension and unique meats. But I enjoyed it and would definitely come back (so close by and $9 3-course lunch next!) to try the more daring dishes.
