Greek Noms

New York has been blessed with early spring weather this year (I hope that doesn't mean an early summer too.....bleh)! The great weather and ending classes early allowed me to spontaneously meet up with a friend on this past Friday. We walked around midtown west..strolled in Bryant Park and shopped...and ended the day with dinner at Uncle Nick's Greek Restaurant.
We started with melitzanes scordalia. It's fried eggplant served with scordalia dip. My favorite was the scordalia which is a mix of garlic and mashed potatoes....so delish with pita bread and it looks like an easy recipe to make at home!
We then shared some lamb chops or paidakia. The dry seasoning was great and lamb chops were cooked medium - i like! It came with roasted potatoes that were different from the usual ones I had. It was salty and sweet and left a lingering sour taste...unique and it was so good.
I heard about spanakopita/spinach pie and wanted to give a try. Unfortunately it wasn't to my expectations. The pie was soggy and spinach was overcooked. I had to force myself to finish it. Gotta go to Essex Market and try the good stuff.

We ended the meal with bakalava. It's a Mediterranean pastry with nuts, drizzled with honey and cinnamon and topped with a light and crispy crust. It has a nutty and rich sweet flavor and if I could, would go well with a hot cup of tea.

What I love about Greek cuisine is the freshness of their dishes. It doesn't seem to leave a bloated feeling when your full. Their seafood dishes seemed very popular when we were there but didn't order any. Not sure if I want to come back to this restaurant though because it was pricey.
